When it comes to listening to your favorite CDs there are a number of different audio products available. A compact audio player is the one that can be easily placed on a shelf. These small units may come as single items such as in the design of the Bose wave audio players. This particular product does not have separate detachable speakers, but instead has them as internal items that are part of the total player. There are a number of manufacturers that do create the speakers as separate styles in the traditional rectangular shape.
Among the different companies that carry traditionally designed base units and speakers you will find products from Sony and Philips. The speakers will usually include a tweeter and woofer and come with the right and left cables for connecting them to the main unit. All of the players created as shelf systems will offer different features and abilities to play different formats of music. Most of the units created to day will play CDs and will generally include an AM/FM radio. Depending on the particular brand and model of audio device you choose, it may be capable of playing CD-Rs and CD-RWs as well.
In addition to playing CDs, these machines can often play MP3 music with some of them being able to accommodate an iPod through a separate dock. There are also a few models that can be connected to a home theater system to play DVDs. The sizes for these shelf players will vary according to the particular model. The more features an audio player has the larger it may be, so you will need adequate shelf space to accommodate the height of the item. They can also be placed on any type of cabinet piece designed especially for use with audio equipment.
Along the same line as the compact player there is the portable player. This is a self contained audio device that will come with a convenient carrying handle. This item can play CDs and has a radio as well. Some models will have the end speaker sections as items that can be easily disconnected from the base to create more of a stereo surround sound. This portable units will offer the same CD playing features found in larger systems such as skip, reverse and pause. Most players will also allow you to pre-program a specified number of tracks to play in succession from a single CD.
